Pre-1st utilizes a unique curriculum to further lay the educational, social, and emotional foundations before first grade. Critical pre-reading and reading skills are emphasized with weekly spelling tests added in to expand reading and writing vocabulary. The class celebrates twice a year by hosting a Readers’ Café, when parents are invited into the classroom to partake in some “delicious” reading!
Math activities use a concrete-representational-abstract continuum with an emphasis on building number sense and critical thinking skills. Students work with math partners to explore daily tasks, using specific math vocabulary as they explain their thinking.
Bible stories are studied for spiritual insight and application to our daily lives as students look expectantly to see how God is with them each day. The children collect weekly Bible memory verses in a special folder which are then used for reading and individual devotions. Daily teacher-led devotions allow students to learn more about living life to glorify God. Praise and worship songs are added in the mix in a joyful celebration of our God! A volunteer Prayer Mom or Dad shares monthly stories focusing on building a foundation of critical character traits such as obedience, kindness, and perseverance.
The Pre-1st science curriculum explores human development, habitats, botany, insects and other interesting topics. In social studies students learn about different cultures, some famous people, and more about our place in this world.
The Pre-1st mission focus is on being “Secret Servants” to those around us on the CAK campus. The children have fun cleaning the playground, coloring a chalk message on the sidewalk, or making bookmarks and seasonal crafts to gift to classrooms or people on our campus--- all done in secret, of course!
This special year between Kindergarten and first grade is a wonderful time to ground critical skills and to grow academically, socially, and emotionally--all in preparation for a confident entry into first grade.
