CAK Students Follow the Clues in New Forensic Science Elective

When the hit show CSI first aired in October of 2000, no one imagined the fascination with crime scene investigation would grow so quickly! Now, over two decades later, there is a plethora of crime shows airing with high viewer ratings.
Knoxville is blessed to have the University of Tennessee, one of the top universities in the nation for forensics studies, right in our backyard, and the Christian Academy of Knoxville offers a course in this popular field for high schoolers interested in learning more. Sarah Traylor heads up the course at CAK, leading her students through hands-on scientific investigations.

This elective course explores just a few of the aspects of what crime scene investigation entails. It may sound gruesome to some, but for many students the topics of autopsies, gun ballistics, blood splatter, and evidence analysis are fascinating.

Senior, Caroline Meyers is one of those students. “When a teacher is excited and passionate, it makes the class so much fun, especially with the amount of labs and hands-on activities we do. I love this class and would recommend it to anyone interested in learning about crime scene investigation!”

Students even get to test physical evidence during several class labs. “Our labs include fingerprinting, handwriting analysis, blood-spatter analysis, weapon analysis and so much more. It does not feel like school because of how much fun it is to learn about,” said Meyers. The handwriting lab has a mock kidnapping situation, while the fingerprint lab allows students to make a fingerprint card and attempt to find the culprit through careful fingerprint examination.

The 2020-2021 academic year is the first year the forensic science elective was offered, and its popularity has Traylor thinking of even more exciting ideas! “My eventual goal is to have a collaborative project with the forensic science, criminal law, and psychology classes, where each class plays a specific role in a mock murder trial.”

Perhaps future CAK alumni will be some of the nation’s top investigators! If your student is interested in forensic science, please reach out to CAK’s counselors to find out more. Not currently at CAK? Our admissions team will be happy to give your family a tour: admissions@cakmail.org
