Graphic Design Elective Teaches Real World Skills

Christa Margene- CAK Digital Storyteller
Graphic design is all around us. Everywhere we look - advertisements, websites, packaging, publications, even on the printed T-shirts we wear! Graphic design helps us communicate ideas through visual compositions and imagery, but it takes a specific set of skills and software to produce. Christian Academy of Knoxville students who are interested in exploring this career path are getting first-hand experience!
Graphic design is a year-long elective course taught by Ms. Annie Hayden. Hayden introduces students to the basics of Photoshop, Illustrator, basic JavaScript, fonts, and the color pallet. The students also learn a small amount of coding. Giving students the tools necessary to create a unique finished project, while applying the principles of art, is something Annie loves passing on.

When asked what skills she wants her students to walk away with, Annie said, “By the end of the class I want them to be able to put together a great composition, understand basic design, font interactions, and understand how we communicate visually. But I also want them to have fun and feel relaxed within our class environment.”

Whether these skills lead to a career in graphic design, are used to make a little extra money on the side, or are used to create an interesting visual project for class, CAK students gain real-world skills.

Ms. Hayden also teaches several general art classes and wants parents to keep in mind that there are prerequisites to Graphic Design. If your student is interested in this course, reach out to CAK’s counselors to find out more.
