Music Runs in the Family at CAK

Christa Margene- CAK Digital Storyteller
Father and former “Pride of the Southland Band” member, Kyle Phillips, is happy that both of his children, Harrison (9th) and Monty (6th), are in Christian Academy of Knoxville’s band program. Harrison plays the trumpet in the high school band and Monty plays percussion in the middle school band.
“I hope my boys realize the value of learning something new and the benefit of working hard and sticking with it,” says Phillips. “Learning to play an instrument is something you can carry with you the rest of your left, so I hope they realize what a gift it is.”

Phillips, who plays the french horn, was fortunate enough to be in UT’s band while Peyton Manning was the quarterback, and when Pat Summitt led the Lady Vols to 3 consecutive national championships!

Starting in 5th grade, CAK students can become part of the Beginning Band. No prior music knowledge is needed and Band Director Olivia Bullock will even help your student choose an instrument. Bullock is hopeful that the start of the 5th-grade beginner band will help build the program here at CAK.

At one point, the high school marching band had 66 members during the 2005 school year. In recent years, the band program has dwindled to only 15 middle school members and 16 high school members. Since band practice is held during the day, students are able to be in the band and still play sports. Students can still join the middle school and high school band and are encouraged to do so, even if they’ve never played an instrument before! If your student is interested in joining CAK’s band, contact Ms. Bullock.
