CAK Middle School Robotics has a Patent Pending on their Design

The Warrior Middle School Robotics Team is officially patent pending! This is a huge accomplishment. According to the U.S. Patent Office, less than 1/10 of one percent of U.S. patents are awarded to middle school aged students annually.
The pending patent is on a design created during the 2018-2019 season titled “Attachment System for Robotics and Power Tools.” The team had to design a robot that would execute a number of tasks within two minutes and 30 seconds of time. The Warrior middle schoolers developed an innovative interface that drastically improved the time it took to change their robot's attachments with the results giving an overall faster and improved performance of the machine.

"Although it was created for their First LEGO League team competition, the students quickly realized that this system could work for power tools in general," says Coach Tim Rhyne.

"This unique design has applicability in many areas in industry where a gear transmission interface is needed," added CAK CAO and Team Sponsor Terry Gibson. "The CAK device will allow for rapid changing of those attachments and enhanced stability."

The team placed first in robot design/mechanical design at the FIRST LEGO League Tennessee Championship Tournament in Cookeville in 2019. The win was based on its implementation of a unique slide-in attachment system.

After patent searches by the team’s coaches revealed no prior art, the school decided to apply for a patent on behalf of the inventors. The application was filed on June 9, 2020, and received U.S. Application No. 16/896,476.”

“The patent has been filed, so we are officially patent-pending," says Rhyne.
