By CAK Communications

February 6, 2020, Knoxville, TN - A face familiar to Christian Academy of Knoxville athletes, football defensive coordinator Bart Kareken, is taking over the head position for CAK's award-winning Track & Field program. Kareken has coached CAK student-athletes for the past three years, and over the past two years, he has worked closely with Coach Morrison to develop CAK's throwers. He will remain working with the Warrior football program while adding the role of Head Coach of Track & Field.

"Coach Kareken was the obvious choice to lead our track program," says CAK Director of Athletics Ried Estus. "He been a vocal advocate for track in the high school hallways."

"My favorite thing about coaching track is that it is first a competition against yourself to top your previous best each time you compete," Kareken says. "You are racing, throwing, and jumping against other competitors, but ultimately it's about beating yourself each time."

Coaching two sports may seem like a challenge, but Kareken has a passion for developing student-athletes and helping them discover their potential both on and off the field.

"He's added many students to the track roster by simply convincing them they can be successful at it," adds Estus. "He’s not just aware of who the track athletes are, he’s been developing relationships with them for years. If I had my way, he’d be coaching a third sport during the winter.  We’re blessed to have him on our staff”.

Kareken truly enjoys seeing his students set goals and achieve them. "It's awesome to see the joy of an athlete when they set a new personal record in an event," he says. "I also love the team aspect within track meets which requires a diverse group with varied skills in order to score points. You need athletes who can run fast, run far, jump high, and throw heavy things a long way. It's fun to watch all of those pieces come together throughout the season to place at meets."

Kareken holds a Bachelor of Science in Social Studies Education from Maranatha Baptist University. He and his wife, Jeanine, have lived in Knoxville since 2013. They have two sons, Grady (age 4) and Travis (age almost 1). They attend Grace Baptist Church and have been going there for nearly 7 years. In his free time, he enjoys reading, lifting weights, movies, but most of all spending time with his family.
